Anne Shakespeare Against Actors

Posted: January 5, 2011 by 7efellight in Poetry

Of actors the embodied apishness
His wife abhorred with biblical disdain.
Unmanly, simian gestures, mannerless
Delirium seeming, meant she would remain

Aloof. Her precepts, arrant in reproach
Against their histrionic brabblement
On stage, with repetition would encroach
On his resolve, to hers incongruent.

She prayed her husband plays eschew and mend
The shop where gloves were shaped. Her Puritan
Derision of his poetry soon would send
Him forth, who deemed his wife avernal, Anne

The fiend, of heinous prayers, intent to damn
His expectations, nagging ad nauseam.
